“Compile error in hidden module” error message

When opening or using the software you get a message similar to this:

“Compile error in hidden module: modMenuControls.
This error commonly occurs when code is incompatible with the
version, platform, or architecture of this application. Click “Help” for
information on how to correct this error.”

This may indicate that you are running on a 64-bit operating system, but you have an older version of the product that is not compatible with the 64-bit environment. In this case, the solution is to upgrade to the latest version of the product.

Alternatively, if you see this message under Real Estate Investment Analysis, it may indicate that you have ActiveX controls disabled in your Trust Center Settings. In Excel 2010, go to File > Options. Click “Trust Center”, then “Trust Center Settings…”, then click “ActiveX Settings”. Choose “Prompt me before enabling all controls with minimal restrictions”.

UPDATE DECEMBER 2014 #

You may receive this error in the RealData Calculator and other products after installing updates to Excel on or after December 10, 2014. This is a known Microsoft error related to Active-X controls. The solution lies with deleting all temporary .exd files from your computer.
